As Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) prepares to welcome a new incoming class for 2019-2020 to the university’s diverse and growing community, the new academic year is also an exciting time for returning undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students as they further advance in their studies towards graduation.

The 2019-2020 academic year kicked off on August 25 for new and returning students at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) with Orientation Day, which was held under the theme of Hayakom at HBKU. The event posed as an opportunity for students to meet future classmates, faculty and staff, and obtain key information about campus resources ahead of commencing their studies. The university this year welcomes more than 370 new students comprising 46 nationalities, 26 percent of which are Qatari nationals.
A PhD in Computer Science and Engineering student at the College of Science and Engineering (CSE), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), recently completed a prestigious fellowship at the Centre for Humanitarian Data in The Hague, the Netherlands. The 2019 Data Fellows Program, now in its second year, was offered to only four candidates from a global applicant pool.

A session to support children and teenager sustainability learning was recently led by the College of Islamic Studies’ assistant dean of innovation and community development at a local art studio in Kocaeli, Turkey. During his time at the Atelier Fazilet art studio, Dr. M. Evren Tok of CIS delivered a session focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in which he showcased Qatar’s efforts to support the goals on a global level. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Photovoltaic Collaborative to Advance Multiclimate Performance and Energy Research (PVCAMPER) international research group was recently signed by the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). The consortium aims to understand climate-related impact on solar photovoltaic equipment.
By 2050, the UN estimates that close to 70 percent of the world’s population will be living in cities. The numbers -- set to ramp up as the years go on -- are not surprising given vast investments in smart living research and technologies, all with the hope of offsetting some of the undesirable outcomes of densely populated areas.
