Understanding diverse legal systems

The College of Law hosted U.S. scholar Dr. Ryan Rowberry for an insightful session titled ‘Legal Strategies for Protecting Cultural Heritage.’ The event, held in partnership with the U.S Embassy in Qatar, examined legal frameworks that can be adopted to safeguard historic and cultural resources.

Dr. Rowberry is a Professor and Janice C. Griffith Chair in Law at Georgia State Universityand co-director of the Center for the Comparative Study of Metropolitan Growth at the Georgia State University College of Law. His research focuses on contemporary legal issues involving cultural and historical resources, as well as the medieval common law judiciary.

Dr. Susan L. Karamanian, Dean, College of Law, delivered the opening remarks while Dr. Eleni Polymenopoulou, Associate Professor, College of Law, moderated the session.

The discussion highlighted the significance of cultural heritage as a testament to the rich history and diverse identities of societies around the world. Additionally, it explored tangible and intangible elements that reflect communities' customs, traditions, artistic expressions, and collective memories. Both Dr. Rowberry and Dr. Polymenopoulou underlined the mechanisms afforded by national and international law, and efforts that have progressively established safeguards to protect cultural heritage from conflicts and disasters.

Emphasizing the significance of the event, Professor Polymenopoulou said: “Cultural heritage bridges the past, present and the future. Preserving it within the framework of the law is instrumental in maintaining cultural diversity and promoting respect for different ways of life for present and future generations. We are proud to have spearheaded this important dialogue and are committed to the protection, preservation, and appreciation of cultural heritage.” 

The event aligns with HBKU's strategy of fostering pride in culture and heritage while reflecting values that uphold social and moral beliefs.
