Understanding diverse legal systems

Recognizing the rising use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in a wide range of aspects of the law, the College of Law recently hosted a timely lecture to address this fast-emerging trend. 

Held as part of the 5th Annual Clinton W. Francis Lecture in Legal Professionalism, this year’s talk ‘Legal Professionalism in the Age of AI,’ was delivered by Dr. Muna Al-Marzouqi, who is uniquely situated to examine the topic as she is Chief Strategy and Development Officer at Qatar University and a Judge at the Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC). The event examined the challenges to judges and legal practitioners due to AI, a transformative tool that has expanded and streamlined legal research capacity while offering various levels of predictive insights. Dr. Al-Marzouqi emphasized the strategic integration of AI into legal education and practice as well as the work of courts to ensure that technological innovations serve the overarching goals of fairness and integrity.

Commenting on the talk, Susan L. Karamanian, Dean, College of Law, stated: “Dr. Al-Marzouqi’s talk was timely as in January 2026 the QICDRC issued path-breaking AI practice guidance on the use of AI. She shared insights into the rationale and application of the Court’s practice guidance. The benefits of AI are significant, yet its meaningful adoption is critical and requires more than technology; it requires professional readiness, ethical clarity and cohesive regulations. We are proud to use our platform to advance critical dialogue on how legal leaders can responsibly integrate AI, uphold standards, and navigate complex legal relationships across diverse jurisdictions.” 

The lecture honors the contributions of the Founding Dean, Dr. Clinton W. Francis, to the College of Law. It explores emerging trends in law, governance, and policy, and provides a vital space for the HBKU community to discuss the legal and economic trends that support Qatar’s aspirations for sustainable global leadership.
