Global Charter for the Public’s Health central to Dr. Motasem Hamdan’s latest talk

Entity:  College of Public Policy
Dr. Motasem Hamdan and Dr. Leslie A. Pal

Dr. Motasem Hamdan, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Value at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Public Policy (CPP), delivered the second lecture of his ongoing series, focusing on the concept of global health and the collective action necessary to address its most pressing challenges.

In his talk, Dr. Hamdan emphasized the growing relevance of global health in today’s interconnected world. He explored a range of critical issues facing healthcare sectors around the world, such as inequities in healthcare access, the rise of emerging diseases, and the intersection of public health with climate change and political instability.

Central to the lecture was the Global Charter for the Public’s Health, a framework developed by the World Federation of Public Health Associations. Dr. Hamdan used the Charter to highlight the essential functions of global public health—promotion, prevention, protection, and response—and the importance of aligning these across sectors and borders. He also called for stronger coordination among governments, international organizations, and civil society to ensure more resilient and equitable global health systems.

This lecture marked the second of a series of talks Dr. Hamdan is delivering as CPP Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Value. Drawing from his expertise in healthcare policy and education, he will continue to lead timely conversations focused on health-focused policymaking.

Previous holders of Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Value are Dr. Wolfgang Drechsler (2022), Dr. Mutlaq Al-Qahtani (2023), Dr. Erin McCandless (Spring 2024), and Dr. Mark Evans (Fall 2024). Individuals selected for this prestigious position work to address policy questions of local and global relevance and exchange research insights with local researchers from HBKU and the wider community.
