Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) has come up with some creative ways to engage in literacy-centered activities with children and families amidst the ever-changing situation relating to COVID-19 that has thousands in Qatar practicing social distancing at home.
UNESCO defines literacy as “the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.”
The global coronavirus pandemic has left the world in a state of flux. While governments all over the world are moving fast to allay people’s fears, the rate at which misinformation relating to the virus is spreading online is adding further to a sense of panic. Scientists at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Science and Engineering (CSE) have acted swiftly in carrying out studies across social media platforms to determine the most prevalent fears among the global population.

Why is it so important to wash your hands with soap and water?
When Sharifa Ahen, a first-year Juris Doctor student, received news of the discontinuation of all in-class learning, her disappointment was quite evident. But now, more than one week into her distance learning experience, that perception has changed.
“Online learning tools are not entirely new to me because online submissions are a core requirement of our law courses. But what was new to me is having to consistently use these tools remotely and coordinate with many users simultaneously,” said Ms. Ahen.
