Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) established the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) in 2016 with a vision to enrich society in Qatar and across the broader world with transformative educational and research experiences. The College provides graduate programs and research spanning the humanities and social sciences, focusing on intercultural communication, women and society, digital humanities, and translation studies. In addition to five Master’s degree programs, the College currently offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Humanities and Social Sciences.
College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) is seeking applications for a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor in the Women, Society and Development MA program with a specialization in Women’s and Family Studies and a disciplinary background in anthropology, sociology, history, political economy, art and literature, or other related social science and humanities fields in the Middle Eastern context. Successful candidates will work closely with our established programs in the college and will develop academic and research collaborations with potential national, regional, and international partners. They will also teach graduate courses at the MA level and contribute to curriculum development in their area(s) of specialty. They will supervise MA and Ph.D. students and will be committed to research-based teaching and learning.
Teaching at HBKU requires the integration of experiential learning into classroom activities, encouraging students to develop their analytical skills to analyze and reflect on one of the fields stated above. Successful applicants are also expected to maintain an active research agenda by applying for internal and external research grants and participating in departmental and college-wide initiatives.
Overall, the successful applicants will be dynamic, experienced, and internationally recognized scholars with an innovative research agenda, as demonstrated through a strong internationally recognized record of peer-reviewed publications and funding/grant acquisitions.
- Conduct assigned courses or seminars to contribute to student learning
- Supervise independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals
- Serve as academic advisor to students to guide them in course and their selection
- Participate Serve on and chair university and College committees in the evaluation and promotion of faculty
- Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty
- Direct research programs of undergraduate/graduate students and advise on research matters
- Conduct research in the field of specialization and publish findings in scholarly journals or books
- May serve on faculty committees dealing with such matters as curriculum planning and degree requirements, and perform a variety of administrative duties
- Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods to further improve the university/college teaching material
- Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity to contribute to HBKU becoming a leading research university
- Disseminate key research findings through publications, conferences and scholarly presentations to aid in making HBKU a reputable university
- Supervise research projects and theses to ensure success of research projects and students
- Seek funding support for research to help make HBKU a world-class research university
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor
- Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university as required for teaching in certain fields
- 6-8 years of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related areas in the industry (additional experience may be required to show equivalency), with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity
- Good evidence of proficiency in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum and program development
- Research and scholarly achievements judged competent and adequate for the rank of Associate Professor in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities
- Good evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization
- Growing portfolio of scholarly endeavours (funded research grants, publications, IP/patents, etc.) in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university
- Good evidence for an increasing regional and international reputation in the scholarly discipline
- Ability to work with and ability to include diverse groups, cultures and communities
- Participation to develop networks and collaboration within HBKU, and with program partners and branch campuses in both teaching and research activities
