Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has opened its admissions cycle for the 2019-2020 academic year. Prospective students who are looking to pursue their graduate studies at Qatar Foundation’s homegrown University are welcome to apply to one of 26 unique academic degrees offered by its five established colleges. 


HBKU Press Publishes Khalid Hosseini’s Fourth Book, Sea Prayer, in Arabic

Aylan Kurdi unwillingly became the face of the refugee crisis when, on 5 September 2015, a picture of his lifeless 3-year-old body washed up on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea circulated around the world. In the media storm that followed, it was revealed that he and his family were Syrian refugees trying to reach Europe amid the European refugee crisis. Photographs of his body were taken by Turkish journalist Nilüfer Demir and quickly spread around the world, prompting international responses.


HBKU Press Publishes Long List of New Children’s and Young Adult Titles to Launch at DIBF 2018

Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) is excited to launch a long list of books spanning across all genres at this year’s 2018 Doha International Book Fair. From Children’s to Fiction and Non-fiction, the number of books published by HBKU Press is on the rise. HBKU Press’s list of Children’s books features a wide variety of new and established authors that deal with issues related to children in an entertaining and educational way.


HBKU Researcher Shines in Stars of Science Finale

Concluding a momentous annual initiative for Arab innovation, Qatar Foundation’s popular reality TV show Stars of Science recently ended its Season 10, as the jury and public voted for one of the four finalists – who will share $600,000 in seed funding. Nour Majbour, a research associate at Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), earned second place as the season closed with its Grand Finale on Saturday, November 24.

The 2017 Nobel Laureate: Kazuo Ishiguro

In a major coup in the literary world, HBKU Press acquired the rights to translate all eight books of 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Kazuo Ishiguro, into Arabic. The agreement with HBKU Press was signed after Ishiguro was named the winner of the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Committee described Ishiguro as a “…writer who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world".


HBKU to Hold Graduate Open House for Prospective Students

Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) programs are witnessing continuous growth as evidenced by a year-on-year expansion of the University’s academic offerings. This month, HBKU will be hosting its annual Graduate Studies Open House on November 27 where prospective students will have the opportunity to learn about the University’s degrees and academic programs.

HBKU Conference Highlights Need to Introduce Environmental Law to Higher Education in the Middle East

Leading international law scholars convened in Doha, Qatar, for the first Middle East Environmental Law Scholars’ conference hosted by the College of Law and Public Policy (CLPP) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in the first week of November. Through the conference, they set out to determine how to include environmental law in university curricula in light of the teaching of environmental law as a recent development in the region.

HBKU Becomes First University in the Middle East Region to Partner with edX.org and Offer Online Courses

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a Qatar Foundation institution that specializes in higher education, and edX, the nonprofit online learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT, have signed an agreement that will position the University as the first in the Middle East to provide interdisciplinary courses through the online platform. The courses will be accessible to millions of students around the world. 


HBKU Board Member Wins Prestigious Education Innovation Award

Dr. Ikhlaq Sidhu, a member of the Board of Trustees at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), received the 2018 Major Education Innovation Award for his role in driving innovation in education from IEEE -- the world’s largest and most reputable association for engineering, computing, and technology professionals. The award was granted to him for his role as a faculty director and a chief scientist at Berkeley’s Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at the University of California.

The Center for Islamic Economics and Finance (CIEF), part of the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), recently hosted its fourth CEOs and Islamic Finance Leaders Roundtable for top management in the finance sector in collaboration with the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), one of the world’s leading and fastest growing onshore business and financial centers. The event aimed to provide a better understanding of some of the best mechanisms for institutions to implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
