Education City’s (EC) Minaretein Building was the venue for the third edition of the College of Science and Engineering’s (CSE) Undergraduate Students Retreat. Sponsored this year by the Ministry of Defense, the event offers a platform for students across EC to showcase research, engage with industry leaders and scholars, and accelerate academic and professional growth.

Besides the CSE and Ministry, this year’s Retreat was co-organized by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ (CHSS) Dr. Naqaa Abbas and Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ). In keeping with previous editions, the event featured a mix of poster presentations and awards, industry booths and networking opportunities, and expert panel discussions.

The Retreat began with opening remarks by Dr. Eyad Ahmad Masad, Vice President for Research, who emphasized the crucial role undergraduate research plays in developing critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills. Dr. Masad’s welcome was followed by opening speeches by Dr. Mounir Hamdi, Dean, and Dr. Mohamed Abdallah, Professor and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Quality Assurance, both CSE. Before a full day of discussions and breakout sessions, Dr. Sara Al Hail, Head of Research Office, Ministry of Defense, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the importance of such events for fostering collaboration, networking, and mentoring through engagement with experts.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Retreat, Dr. Mounir stated: “The significance of the Undergraduate Students Retreat should never be underestimated. Many participants have utilized the learning and networking opportunities on offer here to inform their research, secure patents, and launch startups. We keenly look forward to attendees at this year’s Retreat making a similar impact within their respective communities.”

“This event was a true celebration of undergraduate research, creativity, and collaboration,” added Dr. Mohammed Al-Hashimi, Professor, CSE, and Chair, Undergraduate Research Retreat. “It was inspiring to see students confidently share their work and engage with industry and academic leaders. I’m proud of the community we’ve built through this retreat, and I look forward to seeing these young researchers grow into future innovators."

The College of Science and Engineering looks forward to organizing and hosting future editions of the Undergraduate Students Retreat.
