College of Law Faculty Launch Book on Trade Restrictions and Sustainable Development

Demonstrating Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s continued contribution to research addressing complex global challenges, Dr. Damilola S. Olawuyi (SAN) and Dr. Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, have co-edited a new book exploring the growing role of trade restrictions in shaping sustainable development priorities and regulatory systems.

Both are members of the University’s College of Law, where Dr. Olawuyi serves as Professor and Associate Dean for Research and UNESCO Chairholder on Environmental Law and Sustainable Development, while Dr. Al-Sulaiti is a lecturer.

Drawing on international and regional case studies and the State of Qatar as a principal lens, Trade Restrictions, Sustainable Development and the Law: International and Regional Perspectives interrogates the legal frameworks governing trade. The volume assesses the capacity of dispute-resolution mechanisms to deliver timely outcomes, and offers practical tools for building trade resilience. It further explains how governments use trade measures and restrictions to advance strategic priorities, including economic security, energy transitions, food systems, climate obligations, and technological competition.

The publication builds on Dr. Olawuyi’s work in international trade, environment, natural resources, and energy law. He has also contributed to advancing the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), informing policy and advising stakeholders across multiple regions.

Hosted by the Centre for Trade and Economic Integration at the Geneva Graduate Institute, the launch brought together academics, policy and legal experts to examine the book’s relevance in today’s rapidly evolving geopolitical and economic landscape. 

Following welcome remarks from Dmitry Grozoubinki, Executive Director of Geneva Trade Platform, the keynote address was delivered by Her Excellency Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva. Her Excellency underlined the importance of safeguarding international trade law in times of crises. Discussions also explored how governments and institutions can enhance trade resilience while advancing sustainable development goals. 

Commenting on the book, Dr. Damilola Olawuyi, stated: “Trade restrictions are no longer viewed through economic or commercial lenses. They increasingly sit at the intersection of sustainability, energy security, climate action, and national development priorities. This book provides timely and practical legal insights that help policymakers, scholars, and institutions navigate these complex and evolving realities while supporting more resilient and sustainable trade systems that advance the SDGs.”

By contributing original perspectives on issues shaping global policy agendas, HBKU faculty reinforce the University’s position as a hub for interdisciplinary expertise and internationally relevant thought leadership.
