While many strategies have been adopted in the fight against COVID-19, few have generated as much controversy and criticism as herd immunity. Put simply, herd immunity is reached when a large enough part of a population acquires immunity to an infectious disease. This can either be achieved via vaccination or natural immunity due to previous encounters with the pathogen, meaning that new cases are contained and do not lead to outbreaks.
In honor of the Year of Culture Qatar France 2020, Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) has released several newly translated books in Arabic that were originally published in French and acquired from prominent French publishers. The books, which vary in genres and target audience, are a part of HBKU Press’s overarching initiative to build bridges between nations though cross-cultural communications and to participate in the knowledge economy.
Dr. Roberto Di Pietro, a professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Science and Engineering (CSE), has received the Jean-Claude Laprie Award. Introduced in 2012, the award recognizes outstanding papers that have significantly influenced the theory and/or practice of dependable computing. The award honors Jean-Claude Laprie (1944-2010) who devoted his entire career to research on the dependability of computing systems. Dr.

The College of Public Policy (CPP) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University was recently awarded one of five research grants offered by Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) for their project titled, ‘COVID-19 Policy Tracker: MENA Government Responses to the Crisis’.
QNRF’s first ‘Rapid Response Call’ was designed to provide funding to projects that address the challenges imposed by emergent situations such as COVID-19.

Dr. Leslie A. Pal, Dean of the College of Public Policy (CPP) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, led an e-atelier on June 4-8 on the topic of “Policy Transfer: Models and Modalities”. The event was sponsored by the International Public Policy Association (IPPA), of which Dr. Pal is the Vice-President.
Dr. Pal was joined by a group of seven PhD students from Iran, Brazil, Netherlands, Kenya, Italy, Mexico, and Cameroon to explore the literature on the topic and applications in their doctoral research projects.

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), in collaboration with SOGLAB (Turkey), NOBOX Lab (Morroco), UNDP (Lebanon Office), and the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF) will host the region’s first human-centered design summer school. Design a Post-COVID Normal will act as a virtual playground to stimulate and design potential solutions for a new normal after the pandemic. The multi-stakeholder program, to be hosted virtually by HBKU, received more than 1000 applications from across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
