The recent eruption of violence between Israel and Palestine was the focus of a joint discussion titled International Law, International Relations, and Palestine organized by Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Law and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). Against the backdrop of deaths and injuries, property destruction, and displacement of innocents in Gaza, academics from the two colleges and a CHSS master’s student tackled relevant legal and international relations issues. Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) will play a key role in Qatar’s participation at the 24th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2021 in Russia from June 2-5, reflecting the university’s continued commitment to cultivate and foster positive cooperation with the Russian Federation across all sectors of common and global interest. 

Dr. Anis Ben Brik, associate professor and founding director of the Program for Social Policy Evaluation and Research (PROSPER) at the College of Public Policy, participated in an Exclusive Brown Bag webinar organized by the European region of the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE), on May 14 titled The Impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic on European Families and Children. 

A new publication by Dr. Logan Cochrane, associate professor at the College of Public Policy (CPP), titled Safety Nets as a Means of Tackling Chronic Food Insecurity in Rural Southern Ethiopia: What is Constraining Programme Contributions? has been published as an Open Access article in the Canadian Journal of Development Studies, with funding from Qatar National Library.

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), has celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2020 and 2021, formally conferring degrees on more than 400 students during a virtual ceremony on May 24.  

The milestone celebration witnessed HBKU passing the 1,000th graduate mark in the 10th year since its founding. Highlighting its sustained growth over the decade, the distinguished HBKU alumni community has now grown to nearly 1,250.

Dr. Mounir Hamdi, Founding Dean, College of Science and Engineering, HBKU: “We are all very proud of our graduating classes and wish them the best in their promising careers ahead. Our graduates have contributed to making the college what it is today -- a vibrant and dynamic source of cutting-edge knowledge in the fields of data science, engineering, and technology.

Dr. Leslie A. Pal, Founding Dean, College of Public Policy, HBKU: “Congratulations to our first cohort in the Master of Public Policy program and for their dedication, commitment and hard work. They were and are a diverse and energetic group, intellectually curious and creative. Our goal was to give them the tools to analyze complex public policy problems facing Qatar, the region, and the world. We hope that in their future leadership roles, they will combine strong technical skills with ethics, and a personal obligation to the common good.

The new normal has imposed the need to celebrate their success online. However, this does not undermine the importance of this graduation as a milestone. Studying and graduating during a pandemic must have been one of the hardest challenges our students went through.
