Researchers at Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), and the Mayo Clinic in the United States, have shown that polygenic risk scores - the estimate of an individual’s genetic risk towards a disease - have a good predictive power for coronary heart disease in Qataris.

Maker Majlis, a platform under the College of Islamic Studies (CIS), collaborated with Earthna to deliver workshops during the “Teaching and Learning Forum 2022” on October 9. It was organized by Qatar Foundation (QF)’s Education Development Institute.
Under the theme Learning for Action and Community Service, the forum aimed to establish service action as integral to the learning process and essential to preparing future generations to address societal, ecological and community needs, both locally and globally.
Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), through the College of Science and Engineering (CSE)’s Sustainable Built Environment (SBE) Research Group, is studying mega events in the region - including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 - to investigate the resilience of urban infrastructure. The studies aim at decreasing the vulnerability of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)’s built environment and protecting its social, economic, and environmental aspects.

The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) recently hosted Dr. Sari Hanafi, Professor of Sociology at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Dr. Hanafi is publishing a book, entitled The Rupture between Religious and Social Sciences, which examines the educational models of Sharia studies across multiple countries in the Islamic world. Based on field research conducted between 2015 and 2020, the study appraises modes of teaching, curricula design, and its degree of inter- and multi-disciplinarity, in order to gauge progressive models of Islamic studies institutions.

The Translation and Training Center, part of the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), recently offered a foundational workshop geared toward translation students, new entrants to the profession, and communication professionals aspiring to specialize in translation.
Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)’s College of Public Policy and College of Law held an online event on September 20 to launch and explore Dr. Ka Lok Yip’s book “The Use of Force against Individuals in War under International Law,” recently published by Oxford University Press.
In the book, Dr. Yip, an Assistant Professor at HBKU Law, presents an interdisciplinary study of the laws regulating warfare. Her work weaves together law, social theories, and actual practice in a socio-legal study of the use of force against individuals in armed conflicts.
