The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) hosted a pre-Ramadan guest lecture “Hope in Time of Despair” by prominent American Muslim scholar Dr. Omar Suleiman on March 27.

Held at the Auditorium and Education City Mosque, the event drew close to 600 attendees, as well as members of the public, academics, and students. In his talk, Dr. Suleiman examined lessons of hope for confronting individual and collective struggles ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan. 

Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328), the famous Ḥanbalī theologian of Damascus, is widely regarded as one of the most studied and cited medieval Muslim theologians. The talk by Dr. Mehdi Berriah, Assistant Professor of Classical Arabic and Islamic Studies, Faculty of Religion and Theology of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, presented parts of a recently published study analyzing aspects of Ibn Taymiyya’s prolific writings.

Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), recently held a workshop to explore how digitalization is transforming Qatar’s water sector and to identify opportunities for trans-sector collaborations. 

Experts from Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)’s College of Law and College of Public Policy (CPP) convened a roundtable on March 15 to examine the international legal and policy implications of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. 

Dr. Leslie A. Pal, Dean of CPP, attended the meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) of the International Public Policy Association (IPPA) in Florence, Italy. The meeting was hosted by the School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute, on January 20-21. Among the agenda items discussed at the meeting were the bids for the 2023 International Conference on Public Policy, the new International Workshop on Public Policy to be held in Budapest on June 28-30, 2022, and plans for winter and summer schools around the world. 

Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al-Nuaimi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID), delivered a lecture titled “Coexistence in Qatar” at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Islamic Studies (CIS). The lecture was attended by HBKU graduate students, faculty members, academic figures, and visitors with an interest in interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence.

The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), in cooperation with the Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), is currently presenting a five-part hybrid lecture series, “Towards Strong and Cohesive Families”, taking place every Wednesday throughout March. 

Faculty, researchers, and students of HBKU gathered with the wider Education City community for the third edition of I AM QF on February 24. HBKU’s contributions as a research university, including collaborative projects and thought leadership, featured throughout the main stage program, including the ‘Strategy Panel Discussion with QF Leadership’ and ‘I AM QF Multiversity Talks’.

Dr. Logan Cochrane, Associate Professor and Director of the Program on Governance, Resilience and Sustainability (PROGRESS) at the College of Public Policy (CPP), was one of the leaders of a recent workshop for students of Qatar Academy Doha.

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)’s College of Law continued its Natural Resources and Sustainability Law Workshop Series on February 23 with the launch of a new book authored by Dr. Damilola S. Olawuyi, SAN (QC), College of Law Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Research.
