The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) provides a unique platform that contributes to critical intellectual debates on Islam in a global context, through its blended academic programs and an immersive learning experience; as well as its distinguished research division, which includes several research centers and clusters.

HBKU’s College of Islamic Studies (CIS) is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will conduct teaching, research, and service to contribute to HBKU becoming a world-class research university and collaborate with faculty members and students to create a vibrant university community that will positively impact and contribute to the development of Qatar and the region by advancing knowledge in their field and developing human capacity through their teaching.

  • Conduct assigned courses or seminars to contribute to student learning
  • Supervise independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals
  • Serve as academic advisor to students to guide them in the course and their selections
  • Serve on and chair university and College committees
  • Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty
  • Direct research programs of undergraduate/graduate students and advise on research matters
  • Conduct research in the field of specialization and publish findings in scholarly journals or books
  • May serve on faculty committees dealing with such matters as curriculum planning and degree requirements, and perform a variety of administrative duties
  • Participate in curriculum development activities, including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods to further improve the university/college teaching material
  • Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity to contribute to HBKU becoming a leading research university
  • Supervise research projects and theses to ensure the success of the research projects and students
  • Seek funding support for research to help make HBKU a world-class research university
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university as required for teaching in certain fields
  • 2-5 years of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related areas in industry (additional experience may be required to show equivalency), with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity
  • Evidence of proficiency in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum and program development
  • Research and scholarly achievements judged competent and adequate for the rank of Assistant Professor in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities
  • With evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization
  • With a portfolio of scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, IP/patents, etc.) in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university
  • With evidence for an increasing regional and international reputation in the scholarly discipline
  • Ability to work with and exposure to diverse groups, cultures, and communities
  • Support in developing networks and collaboration within HBKU, and with program partners and branch campuses in both teaching and research activities

  • Teach graduate courses in the MA Program in Contemporary Islamic Studies and in the PhD in Islamic Studies
  • Ability to teach in English (Contemporary Islamic Thought track) and in Arabic (Fiqh and Society track), or at least to teach in one language and read and write in the other.
  • Supervise master’s theses and PhD dissertations in fields relevant to Contemporary Islamic Studies
  • Proven record in publishing in High-Ranking, Scopus-Indexed academic journals relevant to the field
  • Willingness to shape the curriculum and activities of the Contemporary Islamic Studies MA and Islamic Studies PhD programs by identifying critical and neglected areas in contemporary Islamic thought.
  • Willingness to engage various stakeholders in Qatar and in the region and to contribute to public education and community engagement.
