The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) is part of the College of Islamic Studies, which leads the reform and renewal of contemporary Islamic legal and ethical thought and behavior by contributing a sustainable ethical framework for addressing contemporary global challenges.
HBKU invites applications for one fully funded IIBA-CILE Postdoctoral Fellowship in Islamic Bioethics for a duration of up to six months. This prestigious fellowship is designed for outstanding early-career researchers specialized in Islamic Bioethics who seek to transform their doctoral or post-doctoral research into a publishable monograph or a high-impact publication.
- The IIBA-CILE Fellow will focus on research while actively supporting the association’s global mandate and benefiting from CILE’s vibrant ecosystem.
- Successfully completing the agreed-upon research project within the designated fellowship period (concluding by December 31, 2026).
- Contributing to the IIBA’s global platform by participating in international dialogues, mentorship initiatives, and capacity-building efforts.
- Active participation in the intellectual life of CILE, including seminars, workshops, and education activities, as required.
- A Ph.D. degree in Islamic Studies, Bioethics, Applied Ethics, or a related field, obtained within the last five years (or a successful dissertation defense scheduled before the start of the fellowship).
- 0-3 years of relevant research experience as a postdoc.
- A focused research interest and background in the intersection of the Islamic moral tradition and contemporary biomedical developments.
- A proven record of high-quality academic research and/or a promising publication trajectory.
- Full professional proficiency in either English or Arabic is required. Proficiency in both languages is a significant advantage.
- Membership in the International Islamic Bioethics Association (IIBA) is an advantage.
- A Note on IIBA Membership: For those who are not members yet, upon acceptance of the fellowship, the successful candidate will be granted IIBA membership and will be expected to serve as an active ambassador for its mission during their tenure.
