Open Rank Faculty Position in Operations and Supply Chain Management

The Engineering Management and Decision Sciences (EMDS) Division hosts the MSc/PhD in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) and the MSc in Sport and Entertainment Management within the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). EMDS brings together expertise in engineering, management, operations research, data science, and emerging technologies.  The division focuses on the design, optimization, and management of complex systems across products, services, transportation, information, and financial flows. Faculty collaborate across CSE divisions and actively engage with industry and government partners. CSE provides a dynamic environment where academic excellence and applied research come together.

HBKU invites applications for an open-rank faculty position (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) in Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Operations Research, Management Science, and Industrial and Systems Engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and service activities that advance HBKU’s role as a world-class research university. Candidates are expected to develop high-impact research programs, supervise graduate students, collaborate with industry and government entities, and contribute to the growth of the supply chain management cluster. 

  • Advance educational excellence and drive research innovation in logistics and supply chain management and related fields.
  • Deliver postgraduate courses in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Operations Research, and related fields.
  • Update and enhance course materials to remain aligned with technological and industry advancements.
  • Contribute to curriculum development for LSCM programs and new initiatives at CSE.
  • Supervise MSc/PhD theses and dissertation projects.
  • Mentor students in research methods, academic writing, and professional development.
  • Develop a robust, independent research agenda aligned with EMDS and HBKU priorities.
  • Publish in leading peer-reviewed journals.
  • Secure competitive research funding at national or international levels.
  • Lead or participate in interdisciplinary research teams across CSE and HBKU institutes.
  • Engage with industry partners to translate research into real-world impact.
  • Strengthen partnerships with logistics, supply chain, and operations-intensive industries (e.g., aviation, healthcare, oil and gas, manufacturing, humanitarian logistics).
  • Integrate industry-relevant challenges and datasets into teaching and research.
  • Support HBKU’s mission of advancing Qatar’s innovation and economic diversification agenda.
  • Serve on college and university committees.
  • Contribute to program development, accreditation, and strategic planning.
  • Engage with the broader community through outreach, professional service, workshops, and dissemination of research.

  • A Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a reputable university.
  • Relevant full-time teaching and research experience at the university level.
  • Evidence of academic productivity and/or industry experience is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the postgraduate level.
  • Experience in program or curriculum development is an asset.
  • Strong record of scholarly publications in leading journals.
  • Evidence of securing competitive research funding (for senior ranks).
  • Contributions through intellectual property, patents, or impactful applied research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups, cultures, and interdisciplinary teams.

This is an open-rank search. Expectations regarding research leadership, teaching contribution, service, and industry engagement will be aligned with the appointed rank.  Applicants should apply for the rank corresponding to their current academic standing. Applications for higher ranks than one’s current position will not be considered.

Expectations for Full Professor:

  • H-index of ≥ 30 (according to Google Scholar or Scopus), with a total citation count reflecting significant international impact and recognition in the candidate’s field.
  • A sustained and consistent record of publications in top-tier journals, demonstrating the candidate’s scholarly impact and ability to contribute high-quality research over time.
  • Demonstrated leadership in sustained international research collaborations, including active partnerships with globally recognized institutions, participation in multinational research projects, and contributions to internationally co-authored publications or initiatives.
  • Successful supervision of five or more PhD students to completion, along with a consistent record of supervising MSc students.
  • Proven track record of securing multiple competitive research grants as LPI.
  • Editorial roles, conference leadership, committee memberships, keynote speeches, or other recognized professional service.
  • Demonstrated history of teaching multiple courses in LSCM, OM, OR, or related fields at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Expectations for Associate Professor

  • H-index: ≥ 20.
  • A consistent record of publications in top-tier journals, demonstrating the candidate’s ongoing scholarly impact and ability to contribute high-quality research over time
  • Successful supervision of at least one PhD student to completion, along with a record of supervising MSc students.
  • Evidence of obtaining competitive grants (LPI or Co-PI).
  • Clear teaching record in LSCM, OM, or related undergraduate and graduate-level courses.

Expectations for Assistant Professor

  • H-index: Preferred ≥ 11 (not mandatory).
  • Emerging publication record with evidence of trajectory toward high-quality journals.
  • Demonstrated potential to obtain competitive research funding.
  • Initial evidence of involvement in grant applications or funded projects.
  • Ability to teach core courses in operations management, supply chain, or management science.

Applications in all areas of Operations Research (OR) and Operations Management (OM) are welcome. However, special consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated expertise in:

  • Simulation modeling and simulation-based optimization
  • Queuing theory and stochastic optimization
  • Data-driven decision making and supply chain analytics
  • Service operations management
  • Smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0/5.0 applications
  • Sustainability and green supply chain management

In addition, candidates with applied research or industry experience in the following sectors will be viewed favorably:

  • Healthcare
  • Entertainment and service industries
  • Oil and gas
  • Aviation
  • Humanitarian and disaster logistics
  • Manufacturing and Industry 4.0

Experience with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, including machine learning, data-driven modeling, or related computational methods, will be considered an asset and constitute a strong plus for the position.
