Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), was founded in 2010 to continue fulfilling QF’s vision of unlocking human potential. HBKU is a homegrown research and graduate studies University that acts as a catalyst for positive transformation in Qatar and the region while having a global impact.
Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is a national research institute tasked with supporting Qatar in addressing its grand challenges related to energy, water, and environment.
QEERI – with its experienced scientists, engineers, and technicians supported by its focused management and operations teams, working within its world-class indoor and outdoor facilities – aims to make a lasting positive impact on Qatar and the region. The institute’s work is in line with the goals set forth by Qatar National Vision 2030, and is supported by Qatar Foundation Research, Development and Innovation (QF RDI)
HBKU seeks applications for the position of Research Scientist to join the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute multidisciplinary team tackling critical environmental challenges related to Environmental Health with a specific focus on the impacts of air pollution on human health in arid regions. We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong research track record in understanding and quantifying how specific pollutants and their interactions affect health outcomes using environmental epidemiology and/or toxicology approaches.
The successful candidate will support and lead applied research that combines state-of-the-art research methods with advanced chemical and elemental composition and source apportionment datasets. This role plays a key part in shaping our environmental health initiatives and supporting evidence-based outdoor and indoor air quality policy, guidelines and standards.
- Design, lead, and contribute to applied research studies investigating the health effects of air pollutants and pollutant mixtures in arid, urbanised environments.
- Apply environmental epidemiology and/or toxicology methods to quantify associations between air quality exposures and short-term health outcomes and investigate the mechanism of these effects.
- Integrate advanced chemical and elemental composition data with source apportionment datasets to strengthen exposure-health analyses.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues across environmental science, public health, and clinical partners to advance environmental health initiatives.
- Contribute scientific evidence and analysis to inform outdoor and indoor air quality policy, guidelines, and standards.
- Prepare and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
- Support the development of research proposals and contribute to securing external funding.
- Mentor junior researchers and postgraduate students where relevant.
- Ensure research is conducted to a high scientific and ethical standard, in line with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with government, academia, and industry partners to support Qatar National Vision 2030 goals related to sustainable and resilient healthy cities.
- PhD in Environmental Health, Environmental Epidemiology, Toxicology, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated research track record (as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications) in air quality and human health research for a minimum of 2 years.
- Practical experience applying environmental epidemiology and/or toxicology approaches to air pollution exposure–health outcome studies.
- Familiarity working with chemical and elemental composition and/or source apportionment datasets.
- Experience with relevant statistical or analytical software for exposure and health data analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing scientific outputs for both academic and policy audiences.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary research team.
- Research experience related to arid and extreme climate regions.
- Previous engagement with science-to-policy research.
- Experience in securing research funding and managing projects.
