HBKU seeks applications for a faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor / Professor in critical AI and digital culture. The applicant will contribute primarily to the MA in Digital Humanities and Societies (DHS). We seek scholars examining the cultural, social, and ethical dimensions of AI and digital technologies, with expertise in one or more of critical AI, AI ethics, digital culture, or digital heritage, including human agency and accountability, cultural representation, digital collections, or heritage preservation. The successful candidate should provide scholarly leadership in critical AI and digital culture, strengthen DHS, and contribute to the wider intellectual life of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, connecting critical, ethical, or empirical inquiry with digital culture or heritage.
- Teach, develop, and conduct assigned graduate courses or seminars in AI and digital technologies areas and research methods to contribute to student learning.
- Supervise MA theses, research projects, and independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals and ensure the success of research projects and students.
- Serve as academic advisor to students to guide them in course and theses selection.
- Participate on and chair university and College committees.
- Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty.
- Direct research programs of undergraduate/graduate students and advise on research matters.
- Conduct research in the field of specialization and publish findings in scholarly journals or books.
- May serve on faculty committees dealing with such matters as curriculum planning and degree requirements, and perform a variety of administrative duties.
- Participate in curriculum development activities and academic leadership in DHS, including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods to further improve the university/college teaching material.
- Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity to contribute to HBKU becoming a leading research university.
- Disseminate key research findings through publications, conferences and scholarly presentations to aid in making HBKU a reputable university.
- Develop external partnerships and support student research and experiential learning.
- Seek funding support for research to help make HBKU a world-class research university.
- Maintain an active publication agenda.
- Collaborate across the humanities, social sciences, and computational research to support rigorous interpretation and analysis of digital evidence.
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Digital Humanities, Philosophy, Heritage Studies, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related humanities, social science, or scientific field, with research relevant to the cultural, social, or ethical study of digital technologies.
- Demonstrate a sustained, internationally recognized record of high-quality research and peer-reviewed publications appropriate to the rank of Professor.
- Have substantial graduate teaching experience in critical AI, AI ethics, digital culture, digital heritage or closely related areas, including research methods.
- Demonstrate depth in an appropriate critical, philosophical, qualitative, quantitative, computational or mixed-method approach, with strong research design and interpretive judgment.
- Demonstrate the ability to evaluate ethical questions raised by AI and digital technologies, such as responsibility, fairness, cultural rights or access, and to collaborate across disciplines.
- Demonstrate a strong record of graduate supervision, curriculum development and academic leadership, with experience leading collaborative research and developing externally funded projects.
- Demonstrate the capacity to build research or educational partnerships with museums, archives, libraries, cultural institutions, public bodies, civil society or other relevant organizations.
- Fluency in English. Proficiency in Arabic is desirable but not required.
- Have experience teaching and collaborating in culturally diverse and international environments and supporting students with different disciplinary backgrounds.
