This lecture will explore the challenges that slavery has presented to moral theology across religious traditions, highlighting the overwhelming commonalities. It will also discuss specific challenges presented to the Islamic thought as well as the answers, which Muslim scholars have offered as solutions.

The lecture will propose a reading of the People of the Cave “Aṣḥāb Al-Kahf” as narrated by the Holy Qur’an in light of the modern research on the human-canine bond and the Syriac tradition of the Youths of Ephesus, known as the Seven Sleepers. Such analysis indicates that the Holy Qur’an seeks to redefine the role and identity of this animal.

Jabir Ibn Hayyan was a Muslim polymath, who left behind works covering a variety of subjects such as chemistry, medical sciences, astronomy, astrology, geography, alchemy, philosophy and pharmacy. Known as ‘the Father of Chemistry’ with almost 3,000 treatises ascribed to him, Ibn Hayyan’s contribution is often compared to that of Boyle and Lavoisier in the field of chemistry.

The colloquium, addressing the Middle Eastern culture being defined and driven by digital culture, will discuss the multiple uses of big data and computation techniques.
