Excellence GSRA Student Spotlight Series: Jassim Mohammed Almulla

The College of Science and Engineering (CSE), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, recently announced its most successful cycle of the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) Graduate Student Research Award (GSRA) program yet, with 17 students receiving a scholarship.

The program, now in its seventh cycle, was launched to promote the most deserving students QNRF believe will go on to promote a world-class research culture in Qatar, and who will contribute to the nation’s research and development (R&D) mission.

We spoke to some of the award recipients about what the scholarship means to them, their experience of studying at HBKU and their aspirations to be part of that mission.

What does this recognition mean to you?

It really is an honor to be recognized by such a respected organization, and it motivates me to give my best to meet the high expectations of QNRF.

Can you tell us about your research projects that led to you receiving the scholarship?

I am using machine learning technologies and trying to apply them to the field of sports athletes’ performance and injury analysis, especially the ones related to football, which is directly linked to Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030). Sport plays a major role in QNV 2030 as the country seeks to become a global leader in sport, and bring the world together through sustainable sports development.

Can you tell us about your background, and why research is important to you?

My background is IT-related as I worked in the IT industry for more than 10 years. I spent more than four years specifically in IT for football with Qatar Football Association and was involved in many local and international events related to football. I also recently graduated from HBKU’s Masters of Data Analytics in Health Management program.

What are your long-term aspirations in terms of contributing to Qatar’s R&D mission?

I want to contribute to the enhancement of athletes’ health and performance using technology and to make Qatar a pioneer worldwide in this field.

Can you tell us about your experience of studying at HBKU?

Studying at HBKU was one of the best experiences I have had in my career. The atmosphere, the faculty, and the students are of very high quality, and this enabled me to learn more and invest my time more in research.
