Founding Director of Qatar Computing Research Institute Receives Prestigious Data Award

Executive Director of Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Dr. Ahmed K. Elmagarmid, has received the SIGMOD Contribution Award. He was recognized for his dedicated service to the database research and development community in North America and the Middle East, in his capacity as the founder and editor of the Distributed and Parallel Database journal, and Chair for the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Management of Data (ACM SIGMOD). Dr. Elmagarmid was announced as recipient of the award ahead of the ACM SIGMOD/PODS International Conference on Management of Data, which kicked off in Amsterdam on 30 June and runs until July 5. The award honors significant contributions to the field of database systems through research funding, education, and professional service. The conference is a leading international forum for database researchers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore cutting-edge innovations. As the founding executive director of QCRI, Dr. Elmagarmid has established the institute as a world-renowned center for database research. He is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University in the United States, and a recipient of the NSF Presidential Young Investigator (PYI) award from President Reagan in 1988.
