Web Summit

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), presented cutting-edge technologies originated from its homegrown research and entrepreneurial ecosystem to international investors, policymakers, and other participants at Web Summit Lisbon 2025.

As one of the world’s largest technology events for connecting people and ideas, the Portugal gathering featured 20 program tracks, as well as an array of speakers, startup showcases, masterclasses, and networking opportunities, focusing on AI, fintech, sustainability, and emerging technologies. HBKU’s involvement builds on its long-term strategic partnership with Web Summit to take part in future editions until 2030 and aligns with the State of Qatar’s long-term commitment to build a thriving digital economy and leading hub for research, technology, and innovation.

In doing so, the university exhibited innovations developed to have local and global impact, including its pioneering Eye Tracking Technology for the Early Diagnosis of Autism. The unique tool aids the early detection and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). HBKU also presented Fanar Arabic LLM, a Generative AI (GenAI) framework that integrates in-depth understanding of Arabic data, language, culture, and traditions; QalbCare, a post-emergency cardiac monitoring tool; and QKONs, a digital waste exchange platform that incorporates circular economy principles.

HBKU also presented a range of spin-out products developed by its emerging entrepreneurial base, including sustainability-focused ventures such as Edgeon Technologies, acDAC12, QASR, AISCIA Informatics, and Circlepts. Likewise, wellness-oriented innovations, including DenTech, Eyesha and QABY, were showcased.

The presentations drew more than 2000 participants, industry representatives, and potential investors, who engaged with HBKU experts to explore opportunities for collaboration and real-world implementation. The reception further highlighted the university’s capacity to generate nationally-inspired solutions, strengthen cross-sector partnerships, and contribute to emerging innovation ecosystems globally.

Taking stock of HBKU’s participation, Dr. Nadir Yildirim, Executive Director, Office of Innovation and Industrial Relations, stated: “Web Summit Lisbon provided HBKU with an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate how innovation flourishes through in-depth collaboration. From advanced AI applications to culturally cognizant technologies, our participation reflects the importance of developing solutions that leverage research informed in Qatar, while contributing to global progress. Through partnerships and dialogue at such gatherings, we continue to showcase technologies that bridge cultures and serve diverse communities all over the world.”

HBKU’s presence underscores its commitment to furthering transformative change in Qatar, the region, and beyond by shaping solutions to today’s most pressing challenges.
