Faculty and experts discuss opportunities and challenges of integrating AI into teaching, learning, and assessment
The AI in Higher Education Research Group and Center for Faculty Advancement and Success in Teaching (CFAST), both based within Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Office of the Provost, co-hosted a full-day symposium to examine the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education.
Held at Education City’s Minaretein Building, the symposium featured sessions focused on the intersection of AI with pedagogy, assessment, academic integrity, and equity. The program brought together participants from across HBKU’s colleges and guest experts from Northwestern University in Qatar, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and cross-campus collaboration.
Commenting on the impact of the symposium’s discussions, Dr. Ala Al-Fuqaha, Acting Provost and Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning, said: “As AI technologies continue to reshape higher education, it is more essential than ever that we foster an interdisciplinary dialogue among educators in Qatar and the region. This symposium demonstrates how HBKU fulfills its role as a leader in education and research dedicated to solving critical challenges facing the world.”
The symposium’s themes included the practical and philosophical considerations of AI in education, and innovative teaching tools and strategies that blend AI with experiential learning. Participants exchanged insights on a range of topics, from the promises and pitfalls of AI tools in classrooms, regional perspectives on how AI can support educational transformation in the Middle East, and the role of progressive pedagogy in the AI era.
The event closed with a networking session, reaffirming HBKU’s role as a catalyst for interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. As the university continues to integrate AI into its teaching and learning ecosystem, the symposium marked a critical step in aligning innovation with ethical, inclusive, and student-centered education.
