The concept and potential benefits of innovation engineering formed the basis of a recent lecture held by the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU).

Delivered by HBKU Board Member Prof. Ikhlaq Sidhu, Innovation Engineering and X-Lab Project Opportunities outlined how innovation engineering provides a framework for developing new products, technologies, applied research, and student capstone projects. This, in turn, prompted consideration of how innovation engineering brings inductive learning into the innovation process of any project. Story development, execution while learning and innovation leadership are among the practices and principles which potentially benefit from incorporating the framework for a range of research activities.

As Chief Scientist and Founding Director of the University of California Berkeley’s Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology, Prof. Sidhu also shared insights into how innovation engineering supports the institution’s data/AI projects. Specific examples include the development of 5G mobile services and energy reduction for data centers. By implementing innovation engineering, his teams now accomplish these and other projects in faster times and with higher quality results. His lecture concluded by discussing the groundwork required for potential X-Lab project collaborations between HBKU and UC Berkeley.

Speaking after the lecture Dr. Mounir Hamdi, dean of CSE, said: “It was a privilege to hear Prof. Sidhu’s perspectives on a topic of growing importance in scientific and engineering circles. Innovation engineering undoubtedly has the potential to positively impact Qatar’s scientific and technological development. For its part, the CSE remains committed to supporting the country’s endeavors in the fields of science, engineering, and technology. We’re confident that this lecture – not to mention our burgeoning relations with a world leading university – will help us to shape local and regional advances in innovation engineering.”
