Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) organized another successful edition of its Creative Space Summer Camp from August 6 - 17, 2023, providing an enriching computing-themed learning experience for local primary and middle school students.

The two-week program featured engaging workshops that gave participants a well-rounded view of the field of computer science, including introductions to mobile app development, computer programming, and robotics. It also included creativity-focused classes on movie making and 3D design, equipping students with the knowledge to engage with the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

The collaborative nature of the activities also nurtured a positive learning environment, which sharpened participants' problem-solving and decision-making abilities and taught them how to work as a team toward achieving their collective goals. With QCRI faculty serving as both instructors and mentors, the program helped participants build a foundation of skills necessary for careers in computer science or the STEM fields.

“The Creative Space Summer Camp is an important initiative that combines a comprehensive scientific education with an interactive environment that appeals directly to local youth in Qatar. QCRI is dedicated to making a positive impact on Qatari society by training the next generation of STEM professionals, making it possible for the country to strengthen its knowledge hub and retain, attract and develop top talent in computer science,” said Dr. Eman Fituri, Director of Educational Initiatives at HBKU’s QCRI.

HBKU’s QCRI is a national research institute supporting Qatar in building its innovation and technology capacity by tackling large-scale computing challenges that address national priorities and positively touch upon people’s everyday lives. Dedicated to the needs of Qatar, the Arab region and the world, QCRI conducts cutting-edge, multidisciplinary applied computing research in four focus areas: Arabic language technologies, social computing, data analytics and cyber security.
