The Rediscovery and Remake of Classical Islamic Texts

For centuries, Muslims had memorized, argued, and interacted with different philosophical and religious traditions through the means of parchment, papyrus, and paper. It was not until the second half of the nineteenth century  that classical Islamic works entered a new stage: print production. In his latest book, ‘Rediscovering the Islamic Classics: How Editors and Print Culture Transformed an Intellectual Tradition’, Ahmed El Shamsy unveils the transformation of Islamic scholarship through printing and publishing industries and the effects such mechanisms had on Islamic intellectual heritage.
