Polymer and Metal Additive Manufacturing of Aerospace and Space Parts: A Multiscale Approach

23Feb2022

This online seminar will highlight the opportunities and impediments associated with Additive Manufacturing (AM), a.k.a. 3D Printing (3DP), a powerful technique to overcome limits currently imposed by traditional machining and manufacturing routines.

In the international market, there is a large variety of AM equipment including electron beam melting (EBM), selective laser sintering (SLS), selective laser melting (SLM), wire and arc AM, and so on. Both SLM and EBM techniques are impressive with their high-precision near-net-shape part finishing capabilities compared to other plausible AM approaches, however, there is still a huge gap to reach optimized thermal and mechanical performance for their usage in critical aerospace and space applications. Despite the potential and promising future, the quality and mechanical performance of the AM products have been susceptible to skepticism. Determining allowable mechanical properties from representative samples are becoming more challenging, especially for the parts with a high degree of complexity.
