Biography
Prof. Georgios Papaioannou is a digital humanist, museologist, educator, and archaeologist whose work focuses on museums, digital culture, and digital cultural heritage. His interdisciplinary research and publications explore the impact of emerging technologies in cultural contexts, with particular interest in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, digital documentation, immersive technologies, open science, and the responsible use of AI in museums and cultural heritage.
He studied at the University of Ioannina (Greece), University College London and King’s College London, with further academic and professional training at Harvard University and Columbia University. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (U.K.) and has taught at universities in Europe, the Middle East, the United States, and Australia, including Hamad Bin Khalifa University and UCL Qatar.
He is the founder of the biennial International Conference on Museum Big Data and has led or contributed to numerous international research projects. His archaeological, museological, and digital heritage work spans the Mediterranean and the Arab world, including his long-standing involvement in developing the Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth in Jordan.
