Like most countries in the world, Qatar has several sustainability challenges that need to be addressed. In this online seminar, QEERI’s Senior Research Directors will address energy, water, environmental hazards and corrosion challenges, and discuss different solutions and management methods surrounding them.
Corrosion is estimated to cost the state of Qatar around US$140 billion annually. Corrosion management is critical in maintaining plant integrity and the ongoing reliability of industrial process units. In order to build a more sustainable future in infrastructure, there are a number of corrosion threats that must be both predicted and mitigated throughout the project lifecycle, wherein the selection of appropriate protective measures in the design phase is important to ensure the longevity of the structures’ life and reduces overall maintenance costs.
Corrosion management, especially with data collection, allows for the development of environmentally friendly building materials, manufacturing methods and protective coatings. The following presentation outlines the challenges that Qatar faces with respect to sustainable corrosion management.
The groundwater in Qatar has shown unprecedented deterioration in its quality and quantity over the last period. The extensive sampling and analysis (physical, chemical and radiological parameters) of groundwater collected in Qatar has shown elevated levels of some parameters in some samples. This work aims to give an insight about elevated parameters, their sources, and mitigation measures in order to have sustainable groundwater quality in Qatar.
Qatar is classified as one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, with very few freshwater reserves, and relies almost entirely on desalination to provide the water needs of the country. In this short talk, the challenges of providing and treating water resources in the arid environment are outlined, along with some of the technological and research initiatives currently being investigated by QEERI Water Center in order to tackle this grand challenge; such as harnessing non-conventional water resources for treatment and reuse.
Sustainable energy refers to any energy source that cannot be depleted and can remain viable forever, while meeting society's demand for energy without risks to the environment or becoming scarce. Sustainable energy does not have a replenishment requirement and this is where it differs from renewable energy. Sustainable energy is a key element for humanity's future as it produces little-to-no global warming emissions, which effectively contributes to slowing the acceleration of climate change.
