Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) successfully concluded the ninth edition of its Summer Research Program (SRP) with an appreciation ceremony held on August 21st.

The event recognized the achievements and dedication of 19 talented undergraduate students from leading institutions, including Qatar University (QU), Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), Weill Cornell Medicine–Qatar (WCM-Q), Cornell University, and Sheffield Hallam University, who also presented their research projects and shared what they learned during the appreciation ceremony.

Building on the success of its previous editions, the SRP ran from May 18 to July 10, 2025, offering students an intensive, immersive research experience. Participants worked across QBRI’s three specialized centers and had the unique opportunity to collaborate closely with leading scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories, contributing to cutting-edge projects addressing critical health challenges such as diabetes, cancer, and neurological disorders.

Beyond hands-on laboratory work, students participated in specialized professional development workshops. These workshops covered essential skills such as effective research presentation, experimental design, innovation in research, practical CRISPR gene editing techniques, and scientific critical thinking. This tailored, comprehensive approach ensured a well-rounded educational experience, equipping the next generation of biomedical researchers with the tools needed for success.

Reflecting on her experience, Noora Al-Sulaiti from WCM-Q said: “This internship program provided invaluable real-world experience and insightful educational lectures that greatly enhanced my understanding of research.”

Farha Johar Bilal from QU added: “This program was an exceptional learning experience that strengthened my scientific skills through practical lab work and deepened my passion for research. The guidance and support from dedicated mentors created an encouraging environment that greatly contributed to my growth.”

Dr. Omar Albagha, Acting Executive Director, QBRI, reflected on the value the program brings: “The ongoing achievements of the Summer Research Program reflect QBRI’s dedication to nurturing research talent and empowering future scientists, particularly among local students in Qatar. The program offers students opportunities to gain practical experience and vital skills, fostering their career development in biomedical research.”

As Qatar’s leading institute for biomedical and translational research, QBRI is committed to cultivating scientific talent through initiatives like the SRP, while promoting a culture of curiosity, creativity, and high achievement.
