Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), in collaboration with The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, hosted the first-ever MENA 3MT Competition at Minaretein in Education City.

Originally developed by UQ, the competition brought together graduate students from 16 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to present their research and its significance in concise, engaging three-minute presentations. The 3MT program helps students hone their ability to quickly and effectively articulate the value of their research. This skill set is critical in many academic settings, whether communicating with collaborators, funding agencies, or trainees. The challenge of condensing years of complex research into just three minutes makes these skills invaluable for both academic and professional success.

Presentations showcased a wide range of research addressing regional and global priorities, including renewable energy, sustainability, public health innovations, and artificial intelligence. Together, these projects reflected the growing depth of scientific inquiry and creativity among MENA researchers as well as the region’s shared commitment to advancing knowledge that drives impact.

Commenting on the competition, Dr. Maryam Al-Mannai, Vice President, Student Affairs, stated: “HBKU is proud to host the first edition of the 3MT competition in the MENA area, which underscores our dedication to empowering researchers to communicate their ideas beyond academia. This platform showcases the depth and diversity of research taking place here and the wider region. Through our research strategy, we are fostering collaboration, innovation, adaptability, and strategic growth that address the most pressing challenges, while presenting opportunities for sustainable development.”

Held at more than 900 universities in 85 countries, the 3MT competitions also include three major regional competitions: Asia-Pacific 3MT, the Universitas 21 3MT, and the Vitae UK 3MT. The event reflects HBKU’s role as a forward-thinking institution and a catalyst for research excellence and scientific collaboration across the region.
