Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), a research and development entity under Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), has announced the launch of a new internship initiative, the ‘Summer Research Programme’ (SRP).

Running over eight weeks from 10 May to 2 July, the programme is open to undergraduate students from local, regional, and international universities.

Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), part of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), recently hosted a special edition of its acclaimed TECHtalk series. The talk explored technology innovation in the life sciences and economic building blocks of a knowledge economy – both shared economic ambitions of Qatar and the Netherlands.

Qatar’s national vision of transitioning towards a knowledge-based economy is rooted in developing the state as a regional and increasingly global leader in research and development (R&D). The government has gradually strengthened the human and capital resources required to achieve this goal through the transformation of its education systems and with major investments in developing an advanced academic and research environment.

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), on behalf of the Academic Health System (AHS) partners, has organized a one-day conference to showcase partnership developments and highlight career opportunities within the academic health network in Qatar. Leaders from the eight AHS member organizations discussed the power of the AHS partnership in delivering better quality care through collaboration and collective knowledge sharing, and highlighted the importance of translational research in its contribution to the future of healthcare in the country.

Dr Fouad Alshaban, Senior Scientist, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), is co-Lead Principal Investigator of an ongoing Qatar National Research Fund-supported National Priorities Research Program (NPRP) research project titled ‘Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Qatar’.

The goals of Dr Alshaban’s research project are to estimate the prevalence of autism-spectrum disorders among Qatari families, and other families residing in Qatar, before comparing these rates to other countries.

The Summer Research Program (SRP) is a new internship initiative launched by Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), an institute of Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) which is a member of Qatar Foundation (QF). QBRI recently celebrated its inaugural group of students completing the eight-week course.

The SRP was developed as part of QBRI’s strategy to build national research capacity, and to encourage young students to pursue careers in science and biomedical research in Qatar.

The Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), one of Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) three specialized national research institutes, is holding a workshop in Doha in collaboration with the Harvard Medical School Office of Global Education from October 24th –28th. The workshop is the first element of the Harvard Medical School Cancer Biology and Therapeutics program (HMS-CBT), a 12-month non-clinical blended-learning certificate program that provides participants with advanced training in key aspects of cancer research and treatment.

This October, for three days only, the researchers at QBRI exchanged their white lab coats for bright pink t-shirts in order to take their work to the outside world and vice versa. “It gives us some perspective,” says Dr. Julie Decock. “After so many hours in the lab, cancer can become an abstract thing. Meeting with people helps put our work back into context.”
