The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) provides a unique platform that contributes to critical intellectual debates on Islam in a global context, through its blended academic programs and an immersive learning experience; as well as its distinguished research division, which includes several research centers and clusters.
The Research Center for Islamic Legislation & Ethics (CILE) stands as a pioneering and distinctive institution globally, specializing in the broad field of Islamic Ethics, encompassing both its theoretical underpinnings and its practical applications. Renowned for its academic leadership and extensive network of international collaborators, CILE has spearheaded numerous initiatives in research and related endeavors within the field. Collaborating with esteemed institutions worldwide, CILE has convened numerous international conferences, research seminars, symposia, and major international events. In partnership with Brill, a distinguished publisher in Islamic Studies, CILE established the Scopus-Indexed Journal of Islamic Ethics and the book-series Studies in Islamic Ethics. On the educational front, the CIS launched the groundbreaking M.A. program “Applied Islamic Ethics” in 2019, the first of its kind. CILE’s research and education endeavors are motivated by a quest to explore how Islam, as a world religion with a profound moral tradition, engages with and enriches the global discourse on morality. Rooted in interdisciplinary approaches, CILE's activities delve into both theoretical and applied ethics within the Islamic moral framework, as well as within other (religious) ethical frameworks.
HBKU’s Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) invites applications for two open-rank faculty positions in Islamic Ethics. seeking dynamic and innovative scholars to join the team and contribute to the next phase of the Center's growth.
CILE’s current faculty possesses established expertise in theoretical and applied Islamic ethics, with a focus on bioethics, AI ethics, and the intersection of fiqh and ethics. To complement these strengths, CILE is now seeking to recruit new members whose scholarship will expand the current research scope and bring fresh perspectives.
CILE is particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in Islamic Studies whose work integrates theoretical and applied Islamic ethics across diverse and emerging disciplines. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: scriptural ethics, Islamic theology, moral philosophy, environmentalism, psychology, art, migration, and human rights.
The appointees will be expected to secure research funding, publish regularly in prestigious journals, and contribute to teaching in the M.A. program in Applied Islamic Ethics.
- Conduct and publish original, high-quality research in top-ranked academic publications.
- Prepare and submit research proposals to secure competitive funding from national, regional, and international agencies.
- Actively participate in and lead research-related events, such as seminars and conferences, to foster collaborations.
- Teach and co-teach courses within the M.A. program in Applied Islamic Ethics.
- Supervise and mentor postgraduate students in their research endeavors.
- Serve on Center and College committees to contribute to institutional governance and strategic planning.
- Collaborate with faculty on research projects, reports, and papers for peer-reviewed publication.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure research quality.
- Contribute to the development of interdisciplinary research strategies, particularly those combining Islamic Studies and social sciences.
- A Ph.D. in Islamic Studies or a relevant field from an accredited university is required for conducting research and teaching in Islamic ethics.
- Full proficiency in both Arabic and English is required.
- Relevant academic experience at an accredited international university.
- A proven record of research and publications as a leading author in the field.
- Excellent writing and communication skills in both English and Arabic.
- Note: All qualifications, including the depth of experience and the impact of the publication record, will be evaluated commensurate with the rank of appointment (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor).
