Lab Manager

  • Maintain the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of teaching and research laboratories in areas such as embedded systems, digital design, computer architecture, cybersecurity, AI, and programming.
  • Prepare, set up, and test lab experiments and instructional materials in coordination with course instructors.
  • Develop and implement laboratory guidelines, policies, and protocols related to safety, equipment usage, and compliance reporting.
  • Teach or assist in laboratory sessions as assigned by the Dean or program chair, and support students during hands-on activities.
  • Provide training on laboratory equipment, tools, and safety procedures to students, faculty, and research staff.
  • Supervise and mentor laboratory technicians, students, and research users.
  • Guide faculty and students in experimental setup, data collection, analysis, and documentation.
  • Assist faculty with the administration of practical exams and evaluation of student performance, including grading lab reports and other assignments.
  • Develop educational and technical materials aligned with the curriculum to enhance student learning in laboratory courses.
  • Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, computing systems, and instrumentation to ensure reliability and accuracy.
  • Manage laboratory inventory and ensure adequate supplies of consumables, components, and reagents for teaching and research.
  • Monitor and manage the lab budget, procurement, and resource utilization efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental results, equipment usage, lab incidents, and asset allocation.
  • Contribute to program accreditation efforts by providing data, maintaining documentation, and supporting evidence related to laboratory instruction and student outcomes.
  • Perform other reasonable tasks as assigned by the academic leadership.

HBKU’s College of Science and Engineering seeks applications for the position of Lab Manager. The applicant will be responsible for supporting the academic objectives of the Computer Engineering program, with a focus on embedded systems, digital design, computer architecture, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and programming languages. The selected candidate will also be responsible for overseeing daily laboratory operations, preparing and maintaining experiments, and providing technical support for instructional activities.

  • Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience managing research or teaching laboratories in a relevant technical domain.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory instruction or teaching support in a practical, hands-on environment; prior teaching experience is a strong advantage.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in computer engineering, such as C/C++, Python, VHDL/Verilog, or MATLAB, with the ability to support instruction and debugging of student code.
  • Familiarity with microcontroller platforms (e.g., Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi) and integrated development environments (IDEs).
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and regulations; prior service as a Health and Safety Officer is preferred.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting, maintaining, and performing basic repairs on laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports, documentation, and instructional materials; proficiency in Arabic is an asset.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience working with databases and digital record-keeping systems.
