Hamad Bin Khalifa University established the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) in 2016 with a vision to enrich society in Qatar and across the broader world with transformative educational and research experiences. The College provides graduate programs and research spanning the humanities and social sciences, focusing on intercultural communication, women and society, digital humanities, and translation studies. In addition to five Master’s degree programs, the College offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Humanities and Social Sciences.
- Conduct assigned courses or seminars to deliver high-quality education and engage students in active learning
- Supervise independent study activities to support students in their research and independent academic projects
- Serve as academic advisor to students, guiding their academic and career pathways
- Serve as mentors to students, helping them connect their academic studies with real-world applications and guiding them in their career paths
- Serve on university and College committees to contribute to the academic and administrative functions of the institution
- Participate in various university service activities, such as departmental initiatives and community engagement, to support the broader mission of the university
- Render service to the professional or lay community that is relevant to the academic specialty, enhancing the connection between academia and the community
- Participate in curriculum development activities, including the creation of curricular materials and special instructional methods, to keep the curriculum up-to-date and relevant
- Represent HBKU by attending conferences, workshops, and other professional development activities to stay informed about the latest advancements in the field and network with peers
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) is seeking applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice in English. Applicants must hold a doctorate in rhetoric and composition, professional and technical writing, second language writing/applied linguistics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
We welcome candidates from a wide range of specializations who have demonstrated excellence or strong preparation in teaching undergraduate writing. Expertise or interest in areas such as scientific writing, professional and technical communication, rhetoric and public speaking, second language writing, and generative AI is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will contribute to HBKU’s mission of becoming a world-class research university and support CHSS’s efforts to provide high-quality, innovative instruction that fosters human capacity development in Qatar and the region. The position includes teaching General Education courses in English and writing for HBKU’s undergraduate engineering programs, as well as broader service contributions to a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community.
- Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university as required for teaching in certain fields
- 2-5 years of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related areas in industry (additional experience may be required to show equivalency), with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity
- Evidence of proficiency in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum and program development
- Research and scholarly achievements judged competent and adequate for the rank of Assistant Professor in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities
- Good evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization
- A growing portfolio of scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, IP/patents, etc.) in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university
- Good evidence for an increasing regional and international reputation in the scholarly discipline
- Ability to work with and exposure to diverse groups, cultures, and communities
- Support in developing networks and collaboration within HBKU and with program partners and branch campuses in both teaching and research activities
