In Islamic societies, Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) name is among the most celebrated in architectural inscriptions. They include some of the finest masterpieces of Arabic calligraphy and design – in a wide range of scripts, settings, and materials.
Using examples of inscriptions that were available between the 11th and 16th centuries, this lecture will raise the question of why some of these forms were popular during this period, particularly the star-shaped symmetrical inscriptions.
Additionally, the lecture will explore if there is a connection between the hexagram of Solomon and the polylobed rosette, and between the five and six pointed star shapes used in the name and the seal of Solomon.
