This panel aims to discuss racism and discrimination in the Gulf region from a multidisciplinary perspective – social, economic and political.
Building on the momentum gained by the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests in the US, it is necessary to shed light on the forms of discrimination in the Gulf context and engage in an academic discussion on the topic.
BLM has highlighted the existence of systematic and structural discrimination against people of color in the US. We have seen various narratives emerging on this movement all over the world, but we have not seen a genuine and constructive discussion on racism in the Gulf context. Given the lack of research on the issue in the region, we hope to start this by asking these foundational questions:
