Book Launch: Local Content and Sustainable Development in Global Energy Markets

Book Launch: Local Content and Sustainable Development in Global Energy Markets

This webinar will highlight key subjects from the book, “Local Content and Sustainable Development in Global Energy Markets”.

Oil and gas producing countries across the world are introducing local content requirements (LCRs) that aim to increase the use of local goods, services and human resources in the development process. Key questions remain, however, as to whether LCRs aid or hinder the domestic implementation of international trade, investment and human rights treaties.

Contributing authors will discuss key legal and institutional safeguards for designing and implementing sustainable LCRs, including:

Balancing LCRs with the wider policy priorities of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 7 on energy for all;
Importance of networks and supplier development programs for the successful implementation of LCRs; and Lessons from Norway and Australia on how to address misalignments between LCRs and sustainable development.
