Explore the Great Mosque of Rome, one of Europe’s most significant contemporary mosques, through a special screening of “Light upon Light: The Great Mosque of Rome” by Paolo Portoghesi. This documentary was created for the immersive installation recently inaugurated at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, featuring interactive virtual reality experiences that recreate the architectural complex and offer a sensory journey through the mosque’s spaces, materials, craftsmanship and cultural significance.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy, exploring the genesis and enduring significance of the Great Mosque of Rome — a remarkable symbiosis of Italian and Islamic architectural languages, historical and contemporary forms, structure and nature. Bringing together perspectives from architecture, Islamic art, and the mosque's history, the conversation will explore how the Great Mosque transforms these dialogues into a distinctive architectural expression, inspired by the spiritual imagery of Surah An-Nur’s “Light upon light” (24:35).

The Great Mosque of Rome remains a modern masterpiece where architecture, nature and light converge, creating a place of encounter between Islamic tradition and its Roman setting.

The event will be held in English.
