Recently, there has been a great interest in the molecular mechanisms responsible for increased GLUT4 mRNA expression following exercise. Muscle GLUT4 levels decrease with cessation of training. The glucose transporter GLUT4 has a critical role in contraction-stimulated muscle glucose uptake during exercise due to its rapid translocation to the sarcolemma and t-tubule. The molecular mechanisms responsible for this remain to be fully elucidated.
In this lecture, Dr. Hargreaves describes his scientific journey and the use of molecular tools to probe questions in exercise physiology.
