Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually affects older people. The disease affects a part of the brain that controls movement called the substantia nigra. The dead cells in this part no longer produce an important chemical called dopamine. Symptoms progress slowly over the years and major motor problems begin to appear in the late stage of the disease when patients lose more than 80% of these cells. The current therapy is the treatment of symptoms which allows good control of the motor signs, but until now there is no specific treatment for PD.
