Dr. Motasem Abushaban is a Scientist in Water Desalination at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), with extensive international experience across academia, industry, and development organizations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

He holds a PhD in Water Treatment and Desalination from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, and an MSc in Municipal Water and Infrastructure from UNESCO-IHE, the Netherlands. His research focuses on desalination technologies, reverse osmosis pretreatment, membrane fouling and scaling control, brine treatment and valorization, water recycling, process optimization, and development of innovative monitoring methods.

Dr. Abushaban has collaborated with leading international companies and water organizations, including SUEZ, Veolia, Grundfos, Promega, Evides, and OCP. He has also served as an International Water Desalination Expert with GIZ, supporting water utilities and government institutions in desalination projects in Jordan. 

Moreover, Abushaban led research activities, supervised 8 PhD students and researchers, and successfully secured research funding exceeding 1.8 million USD. He received the International Desalination Association (IDA) Innovation Award at the 2017 World Congress for developing an ATP-based bacterial growth potential monitoring method.
