Professor Beverley Milton-Edwards

Professor Beverley Milton-Edwards is a Senior Policy Advisor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Doha, Qatar. She is also a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs.

Previously, Milton-Edwards was Professor of Politics at Queen’s University Belfast, Director of the Centre for the Study of Ethnic Conflict, as well as MA Programme Director on Violence, Terrorism and Security. She has enjoyed Visiting Fellowships at the Brookings Doha Center, Georgetown University and Oxford University, where she wrote about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and security challenges in Iraq, Jordan, and Yemen, among others.

Her career in Policy Advice has included working for:

• The European Union Head of Foreign Policy and Security
• The European Union Special Envoy MEPP
• The Government of the UK
• The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands and Norway

She has also been part of ceasefire mediations and track II negotiations at different stages of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In 2007 she was awarded a Commendation and a Medal by EUPOLCOPPs for her services to peace in the Middle East.

Milton-Edwards has authored many books including:

• Contemporary Politics in the Middle East (Polity Press, 2018)
• The Muslim Brotherhood: The Arab Spring and its future face (Routledge, 2016)
• Islamic Fundamentalism since 1945 (Routledge, 2014)
• Hamas: The Islamic Resistance Movement (Polity, 2010).

She has also published numerous articles in International Affairs, Security Dialogue, Journal of Palestine Studies, British Journal of Middle East Studies, and Third World Quarterly, among others.

Milton-Edwards is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and Co-founder and initial board member of the British Association of Islamic Studies. She has served as a member on the council to the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies and on editorial boards such as British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies and International Dialogue.

Milton-Edwards is a Fellow of the NTFA, and has won numerous teaching awards including:

• The Queen’s Teaching Award
• The UK National Teaching Fellowship Award
