Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press was launched in 2010 in Doha, Qatar. A local publishing house with a global perspective, HBKU Press strives to empower Arab voices and stories, as well as translate critical literary contributions from around the world to make quality literature more accessible to readers of all ages and reading levels.
HBKU Press aims to shape the academic research and literary landscape of the region by contributing its unique Qatari and Arab voices, ideas, and perspectives, and encourages and supports talents throughout the writing journey. As a dedicated platform for academic and trade publishing, HBKU Press strives to foster, support, and highlight Qatari and regional academics, authors, illustrators, and translators.
HBKU seeks applications for the position of Academic Publishing Specialist. The applicant will be responsible for proposing, developing, and supporting academic publishing products and services, including journals, books, and conference proceedings, in alignment with market needs and HBKU Press’ academic publishing strategy.
- Oversee the publication schedule and support editorial projects in line with HBKU Press editorial policies, procedures, and overall mission.
- Support the commissioning, planning, and progress tracking of academic publishing projects, including preparing and reviewing P&L reports.
- Evaluate submitted academic proposals (journals, books, conferences) and provide recommendations based on quality, relevance, and strategic fit.
- Contribute to the development of new academic publishing products and services by identifying opportunities and recommending new projects.
- Strengthen HBKU Press’ mission to become an international research hub by supporting the development of high-quality academic content and relationships.
- Build and maintain strong networks with editors, authors, institutions, and relevant academic stakeholders across Qatar and the region.
- Use systems such as BiblioCloud and Editorial Manager to input, update, and maintain titles, workflows, and production timelines.
- Report technical issues to the production team and provide support in issue-resolution where applicable.
- Support academic outreach and business development events in coordination with Communications/Marketing, including suggesting sponsors where appropriate.
- Stay updated on scientific and digital publishing trends, including Open Access, peer-review developments, and digital platforms.
- Assist with marketing-related tasks linked to publication development, such as providing input for digital assets (graphics, banners, etc.).
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Bachelor’s degree with 6-8 years of relevant work experience in academic publishing, research, communication, or a related field.
- Knowledge of international publishing practices and familiarity with editorial and peer-review processes.
- Experience or strong interest in Scientific, Technical, and Medical (STM) publishing.
- Understanding of Open Access models, scholarly journals, and academic book markets; experience as an author, reviewer, or editor is preferred.
- Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders.
- Interest in publishing trends, including digital media and cross-platform publishing.
- Experience in presenting to academic audiences, proposal writing, and lecturing.
- Basic knowledge of HTML/XML is desirable.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications, and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely; Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
