The lecture will be held in English with live Arabic translation.
The “What is Sharia?” public lecture series comprises three separate lectures that will each explore an aspect of Sharia that informs the fields of legal knowledge and practice and from which comparative and critical insights are drawn.
This first session explores the relationship between Sharia law and ethics in Islam, offering insightful comparisons with modern legal frameworks. Using problems of moral philosophy (the study of what is right and wrong) and conceptual genealogy (the historical development or origin of concepts), this session seeks to identify aspects of the Islamic ethical and legal system that differentiate it from modern law.
