The COVID-19 pandemic, as declared by the World Health Organization, has not only created a global health hazard but also caused a severe “moral panic”. 

While COVID-19 has limited and fixed symptoms, the moral panic it is causing has many manifestations. Today, not only global affairs and various related systems are being tested because of the pandemic but our moral values too. 

Dr. Dilip Soman is  Canada Research Chair in Behavioral Science and Economics, and serves as a Director of the Behavioural Economics in Action Research Centre at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. His research is on behavioral science and its applications to consumer wellbeing, marketing, and policy. He is the author of ‘The Last Mile: Creating Social and Economic Value from Behavioral Insights’ (University of Toronto Press 2015) and teaches a massive open online course, ‘BE101X: Behavioural Economics in Action’ on edX.

This lecture introduces the concepts of Artificial Intelligence (AI), providing a flashback of the initial failures, and attributing the recent successes in this area to the advent of statistical and deep learning methodologies. 

The lecture also seeks to predict how far AI methods in language processing can go and the ability of computers to understand, translate, and produce human languages.

This specialized roundtable discussion explores the theme of religious tolerance. The focus will be on the Middle East but will highlight Qatar’s unique role in promoting religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
