Congestive heart failure is a devastating disease that is characterized by impaired left ventricular function, compromising the heart’s ability to pump blood – taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined.
Carvedilol broadly belongs to the class of drugs known as beta-blockers, but it also has several other important pharmacological activities that distinguish it from that class, making the drug particularly useful, and highly effective, in the treatment of congestive heart failure.
This translation workshop aims to introduce participants to the techniques and strategies that can be used to translate a wide range of linguistically sophisticated texts from fields as varied as media, sports, commerce, business, tourism, advertisement, literature and law. The instructional materials are tailored in such a way as to accommodate differences in learning needs, interests, and levels of readiness.

This presentation examines the semiotics of Sinophone Muslim (‘Sino-Muslim’) heritage literacy in a way that integrates its Perso-Arabic textual qualities with broader cultural semiotic uses. It also explores how signs of ‘Muslimness’ are displayed and manipulated in different contexts both covertly and overtly. This is done by using data that incorporates images from the linguistic landscape of Sino-Muslim life alongside interviews with community members about their heritage.
