This event is organized by Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Law and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) to mark the 60th anniversary of UNCITRAL’s work to unify, harmonize, and modernize international trade law.
Since its establishment by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1966, UNCITRAL has served as an intergovernmental forum for dialogue and consensus on key issues in international trade law, developing solutions to overcome significant obstacles to international commerce and support sustainable economic development.
UNCITRAL has developed model laws and principles across areas including investment arbitration, commercial arbitration, insolvency, security interests, trade finance, electronic commerce, procurement and the sale of goods.
UNCITRAL’s 60th anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on its achievements, acknowledge the contributions of Member States and stakeholders, and look ahead to emerging challenges in the evolving landscape of international trade.
The lecture will explore the role of UNCITRAL texts in addressing legal issues arising from disruptions to maritime transport and global supply chains, energy market shocks, and interruptions to the trade of key commodities, including urea and phosphate fertilizers. It will also examine legal tools for managing commercial risks arising from unpredictable circumstances and regional conflict.
The event will highlight relevant UNCITRAL texts and developments, including resources and recommendations developed in response to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as UNCITRAL’s 2024 toolkit.
