Dr Omar El Agnaf, College of Science and Engineering, Hamad bin Khalifa University, a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), is one of the world’s top Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease research scientists. He has just been given the role of lead researcher on the first project globally to be given access to spinal fluid samples obtained through a major clinical research project, with samples granted through the Michael J Fox Foundation.

Dr Kolatkar presented work at NYU-AD which showed the importance of how transcription factors make partnerships using distinct but highly similar genomic binding sites to enable diverse cell fates. A highly collaborative framework comprising stem cell biology, bioinformatics,genomics and protein biophysics allowed the connection from in vitro models to animal models. Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development, will play a significant role in this year’s Annual Research Conference (ARC ’16). At the event, which will take place on March 22nd – March 23rd at the Qatar National Convention Centre, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), and Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) will come together for the first time at a major event under the auspices of the university.

Qatar University Biomedical Research Centre organised a seminar on the use of stem cells to treat diabetes. The event on ‘Pluripotent stem cells as tools for disease modeling and cell therapy in diabetes’ was delivered by Dr Essam M Abdelalim, scientist, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, and Assistant Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU).

The Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) and the Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute (QEERI), two of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)’s national research institutes, came together to organise a special twoday event - ‘Bright Spark’ - for high-school students.

With the support of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the event saw the involvement of more than 300 students - the majority of whom were Qataris - from 72 schools, participating in the Qatar National Astronomy Olympiad (QNAO) and the Qatar Brain Bee Competition (QBBC).
