Being Happy Leads to Self-Empowerment: Seven Ways to Think Happy
On the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, Mallika Jaiswal, business support officer at the College of Health and Life Sciences (CHLS) and Paul Grimshaw, associate professor at CHLS, share with us tips on how to think happy.
The key to happiness lies in your hands is the truest of all statements. Happiness is a product of one’s mindset and can be easily influenced by many factors. We all want to be happy each day, but even issues as simple as the commute to work may alter your mood. That is, external factors, or re-engaging your mind in stressful, irritating work or family issues, often come into play. However, individuals often have control over letting these influences make them miserable or not letting them bother them.
Central to an individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being is a healthy mind. Being in good mental health is important to addressing happiness, as it determines how we think, feel, behave and in large part determines how we handle stress, anxiety, personal interactions, and business decisions on a daily basis. This realization should impact your approach to everything else in your life.
Power of Self-Belief and Affirmation: Believe with your whole heart that you can do anything, you control your actions and manifest your intentions. Remind yourself daily and over time, as this filters through your thoughts and restructures the dynamic of your brain so that you truly begin to think nothing is impossible.
Have a Growth Mindset: Expect life to be ever-evolving and welcome change and take changes as challenges to learn and grow more. Even if you do not like the outcome or things don’t go as planned, you still win as you learned along the way.
Hone your Creative or Physical Skills: Take up a hobby or work on your fitness goals, it brings a sense of accomplishment and confidence. There are numerous things you can learn, for example a new language, painting, self-defense, and horse riding, or even reading a book. Realize that the journey itself is the reward and fall in love with self-discovery.
Declutter: Declutter your workspace and your mind as this is the quickest way to feel accomplished and provides you with a clearer way forward. A clean workspace is the start to a clear mind where ideas manifest.
Maintain a Healthy Work-Life balance: Do not wait all week for Friday, just take some time off and switch off and focus on your mental well-being. Yoga and meditation really help, but if you are hyperactive try listening to music or going on a long drive as it can be the much-needed disconnect from our busy lives. Get enough sleep, lack of sleep is the biggest cause of stress and mental health issues.
Get to know the people you are working with: Take the time to have conversations with your colleagues and to create a supportive attitude, which will motivate and influence others too. Foster a growing and learning atmosphere to stimulate employee engagement and encourage innovative thinking. In this way, employees feel a strong commitment to their organization, and they perform with passion, commitment, and enthusiasm. Spend time with your family, friends, and other loved ones.
Exercise: Finally, many of us do not like the thought of regular exercise, especially given how busy our working days can be. But, regular exercise can reduce your risk of heart problems, it can help manage your weight, lower your cholesterol , and develop stronger and more stable muscles, bones and joints. And, even if you cannot find the time to exercise regularly start by just going for an energizing 15-minute walk each day.
Being happy does not mean that there is no negativity or stress in your life, it simply means that you empower yourself to recover from the negative experiences. Do not let the pursuit of happiness become a duty that you have to fulfill every day as this will only make you unhappy if you cannot achieve success. Rather, make it a shift of your mindset over time, which results in a sense of overall well-being and satisfaction. If after all your trials, you continuously fail to achieve a good state of mental health and happiness or suffer from mental health issues then please reach out to close ones or seek professional help.
